about
Brother Jonathan is the first single from Glenn Meling's new album, Minnesota. The album is about migration to America in the 19th century, when Brother Jonathan was a term used by immigrants to refer to the USA. Brother Jonathan, which predates the more widely known phrase Uncle Sam, personifies the spirit of the new nation in the eyes of the Europeans who left their homelands behind for a fresh start across the Atlantic.
lyrics
Brother Jonatan
Brother Jonathan
Light up my life
Your sister Liberty
The chains are broken
At her feet
Brother Jonathan
Open up your arms
New York City
I’ve got nothing left but I’m free
Shine a light on me
I won’t let you down
Give me land - give me lead
I’ll shovel the coal
I’ll work the land
To make your heart beat
Brother Jonathan
I will make you what I am
From the core of my beliefs
And every talent I possess
In the city of dreams
I had it all but lost every dime
But I have no regrets
I will shine before I die
Shine a light on me
I won’t let you down
You gave me shelter from the rain
And a chance
To start all over again
Shine a light and receive us
Like an angel for the dreamers
Let me know what I am - Set me free
Brother Jonathan
